Drunk Pilots!

Every once in awhile, we all seen the news headline of drunk pilots being arrested. More than likely, it probably makes you cringe. For some people such as fearful fliers, they get extreme anxiety. Some people may become fearful of flying because of pilot trust issues. Many people wonder is this a wide spread problem. The answer is no! I do not believe this to be a wide spread problem. Like most pilots, I sometimes have a drink after my flight. But, the rules are clear which is no drinking eight hours from bottle to throttle. In other words, you must allow a minimum of eight hour before you fly. If a pilot decides to drink beyond that, he faces enormous challenges in trying to get away it.

For instance, at most hotel bars were flight crews members stay the bar tender is familiar with the flight crew members. Most of the hotel staff know the crew as well. In many cases, airline management has an agreement with the hotel staff to inform airline management of any inappropriate behavior. Also, the other crew members careers and life's are at stake. They have many incentives to whistle blow on any crew member that appears to be drunk. There's not a blue wall of silence like what you may see in some police departments. The incentive of crew members to whistle blow is that they must ask themselves that their spouse, girlfriends, parents, and friends could be traveling on a buddy pass at any given time on their airline so would they feel comfortable or safe with their coworker working that flight. This is a common question that airline interviewers ask before they decide to hire a pilot applicant.

This pilot applicant could be flying my wife someday so how would I feel hiring them? In addition, many airlines are very sensitive to hire a pilot applicant who may have had problems with abuse of alcohol. During the interview, many questions related to alcohol are asked. The airlines also check to see if the pilot applicant has any history of driving while intoxicated (DWI). Any applicant with a dwi more likely will not get hire. Similarly, if you have too many speeding tickets the airlines will conclude that you are a candidate for a dwi someday, and therefore not hire you. However, if someone slipped through the crack and got hire at a airline there are many channels of people you have to talk to before you even touch an airplane.

The odds of being caught are high. All you have to do is ask the crew of America West Airlines that attempted to go to work intoxicated in Miami. They had too much to drink and instead of calling in sick, they now are sitting in a prison cell for 10 years. This crew was caught by a sharp eye Tsa Agent. I realize that each time passengers see a headline of drunk pilots they get anxiety over it. However, I don't believe this is a wide spread issue. Rest assure there are checks and balances to keep the system safe.
