Becoming an airline pilot is the dream of many often from a young age (like me). But this profession is highly competitive and presents many hurdles before anyone can get in the cockpit of a commercial aircraft.
What it takes...
Patience, training to be an airline pilot will take at least a year. If you manage to complete your training and get an ATPL then it can take several months or even years to get that first job. This will put many off from thinking of a pilot career. These people are the impatient ones, if you want to make it you have to realize that it will take time and sacrifice.
Sacrifice, pilot sponsorships are rare these days, the majority of pilots have to finance their own training. This usually requires some huge sacrifices in order to raise the finance. A lot of people will not be willing to make these sacrifices. If you are to make it then you must be willing to make such sacrifices, but it will be worth it in the end.
1.Commitment, training to become an airline pilot is very expensive and time consuming. You must be committed if you are ever going to get past the training stage in order to become fully qualified.
Determination, this is a big one, you are likely to come across many setbacks when training to become an airline pilot. These include financial setbacks, failing ground exams/flight tests as well as failing job applications. Some setbacks are normal on the way to a career as an airline pilot. If you are weak and give up to easily then look for another career. The true eager future airline pilot must show determination and a refusal to give up.

Intelligence, don't panic you do not need to be a genius to become an airline pilot. However you must posses a reasonable level of intelligence. You will need a decent level of numerical abilities as well as
a good aptitude.
Teamwork, flying is about teamwork. Big commercial jets do not just require one pilot, but they require a whole team of people both on the ground and in the air. You must be a team player and this is one aspect that airline recruiters will be looking for.
Leadership, as an airline captain you will be leading a whole team of people. Hence good leadership qualities are essential to the aspiring airline pilot.
